Explore the stunning Hauraki region along the Hauraki Rail Trail with our 2-day cycling adventure from Thames to Waihi, traversing the scenic Karangahake Gorge. Immerse yourself in the history and natural beauty of this iconic trail, starting from the coastal town of Thames.
Day 1: Coastal Charms and Historic Paeroa
Embark on a journey through the Hauraki plains, following the Hauraki Rail Trail out of Thames with captivating views of the Kaimai Ranges. Pause for morning tea at the Matatoki Cheese Barn before reaching the historic town of Paeroa, the birthplace of the 'World Famous in New Zealand' L&P drink. Explore antique shops and enjoy an overnight stay in Paeroa.
Day 2: Karangahake Gorge Marvels and Waihi Gold Discovery
Discover the highlight of the Hauraki Rail Trail as you traverse the Karangahake Gorge alongside the Ohinemuri River, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, including the Owharoa Waterfall. Explore historic sites like Karangahake mining sites and the Victoria Battery, with a unique ride through the 1100-meter-long railway tunnel. Stop at Waikino Station for a delightful meal at the Waikino Station Cafe. Arrive in Waihi, explore the Gold Discovery Center, and conclude your journey with a 4 pm shuttle back to Thames, allowing ample time for a relaxed experience throughout the day.
Duration: Day 1: 4-5 hours (incl. lunch stop), 34 km Day 2: 6-7 hours (incl. walks/attractions), 24 km

Recommendations:
Have a quick stop at the Kopu bridge to look back at Thames, giving you a great view. Once you are in Paeroa, visit the L&P Cafe and the giant L&P bottle for a photo. Check out the Windows Walkway which is in the Karangahake Gorge to enjoy the bush and to see the Gold-Mining history in the area. (Approx, 45 Minutes - 1 hour). Also have a quick stop at the Owharoa Falls to take in the beauty of the Falls.

Rental Terms and Conditions
Minimum age for renting e-bikes is 18 years and experience with cycling, however children under 18 maybe able to use the e-bikes provided they meet the minimum rider size for the bike. Adult guidance is required for children under 18.
Half day: 4 hours in total, no reservations possible in advance (bike hire only).
Monday - Friday hires must be returned before 1:30pm. Saturdays hires must be returned before 1:30pm. Not possible on Sundays.
Optional accidental damage insurance: Standard bikes incur a fee of $10 per day, while e-bikes are subject to a $15 per day charge.
Surcharge for usage on mountain bike tracks: 50% of standard price (due to more intensive cleaning requirements and higher wear and tear).
One way hire (on request) only to Paeroa $100 per bike; any other location a relocation fee of $100 - $205 applies.
Discount for rentals: 4+ days: 15% off total price
Public holiday surcharge extra $30 per booking
